Intermediate
Grade 7 - Overall Expecations
Science and Technology (Life Systems: Interactions Within
Ecosystems)
- demonstrate an understanding of the interactions of
plants, animals, fungi, and micro-organisms in an
ecosystem
- investigate the interactions in an ecosystem, and
identify factors that affect the balance among the
components of an ecosystem
- demonstrate an understanding of the effects of human
activities and technological innovations, as well as the
effects of changes that take place naturally, on the
sustainability of ecosystems
Example activity: Students choose an ecosystem
(milkweed patch for instance) and study the biotic and
abiotic factors within it. Using these scientific facts, a
children's story book is then created (incorporating English
expectations as well). The specific ecosystem is the setting
and its inhabitants are the main characters in the
story.
Geography (Natural Resources)
- describe how humans acquire, manage, and use natural
resources, and identify factors that affect the
importance of those resources
- describe positive and negative ways in which human
activity can affect resource sustainability and the
health of the environment
Grade 8 - Overall Expectations
Geography (Economic Systems)
- compare the economies of different communities,
regions, or countries, including the influence of factors
such as industries, access to resources, and access to
markets
In addition, the study of the migration of the monarch
(what reasons it has to migrate) could be linked to the
geography unit on migration.
Example activity: Students could study the economy of
Mexico, and in particular how Mexicans are making money
through the monarch butterfly (tourism, planting of trees
etc.)
Grade 9 - Overall Expectations
Academic Geography (Human-Environment Interactions)
- analyse the ways in which natural systems interact
with human systems and make predictions about the outcome
of these interactions
(Global Connections)
- analyse connections between Canada and other
countries
(Understanding and Managing Change)
- explain how global economic and environmental factors
affect individual choices
Example Activity: Study what is being done to preserve
monarchs in Canada, the United States and Mexico, including
the reasons for the lack of response from the governments of
the three nations.
Applied Geography (Human-Environment Interactions)
- assess the impact of human systems and/or resource
extraction on the natural environment
(Global Connections)
- identify the economic, cultural, and environmental
connections between Canada and the other countries
- explain how current global issues affect
Canadians
(Understanding and Managing Change)
- explain the relationship between sustainability,
stewardship, and an "ecological footprint"
- apply the concepts of stewardship and sustainability
to analyse a current national or international issue
Example Activity: Play the game "Tragedy of the Commons"
which is about sustainability. Write to the Mexican
government about the preservation of the oyamel forest in
Michoacan, which is the main winter resting place of
migrating monarchs east of the Rockies.
Grade 10 - Overall Expectations
Academic Science (Biology: The Sustainability of
Ecosystems)
- demonstrate an understanding of the dynamic nature of
ecosystems, including the relationship between ecological
balance and the sustainability of life
- investigate factors that affect ecological systems
and the consequences of changes in these factors
Example activity: Study of the use of pesticides with
respect to the monarch and other insects and a debate on
whether a community should use them or not.
Applied Science (Biology: Ecosystmes and Human
Activity)
- demonstrate an understanding of ecosystems, including
the relationship between ecological balance and the
sustainability of life
- analyse natural and human threats to a local
ecosystem and propose viable solutions to restore
ecological balance
Example activity: Record data about the insect/wild
life in an area of the school ground. Then, create a school
garden and see if the results are different. "Awesome
Aggregations" activity about monarchs' overwintering
protection.
